The truth is the transition from addiction to recovery can be extremely stressful and emotional. And that’s putting it nicely.
Yet, once you stay sober for a bit of time and continue to work on yourself, your life will begin to fall into place.
That being said, when the time comes to improve your well-being in recovery, you got to keep it simple.
These simple things are absolutely necessary for improving your wellbeing in recovery. You can have the healthy lifestyle you want now that you are sober.
Neglecting Your Well-being
Your health is a very precious thing, but you may not have prioritized it like you should in the years leading up to this point. Let’s face it, our health was really not something we thought about while using.
That is why it’s so important to take care of your health once in recovery. Not only will it improve your wellbeing physically but, it will improve your wellbeing mentally as well.

Now, it’s time to take action to have the healthy sober lifestyle that you want. Below, I have outlined the 4 things you NEED to start doing first and how to take action implementing these things into your sober life.
First off, addiction can do funny things to your eating habits and patterns. In fact, it often leads to one extreme or another where you either overeat or don’t eat enough.
Of course, the food that we eat is what fuels our body and that means we can help ourselves feel a lot better by eating a balanced and nutritious diet.
Do be careful of replacing one addiction for another. Sugary foods, takeout, or even just food, in general, can become an alternative way of getting that dopamine fix that your body is still craving.
This is a coping mechanism that can also become maladaptive and problematic over time if you let it. Which is exactly why eating the right foods is necessary to improve your wellbeing in recovery.
I know plenty of people in long term recovery that have really packed on the pounds. I’m sure you do too. Our metabolism, energy, and all that stuff works completely different when we are sober then it did when we were getting high all the time. Your body is not going to react the same way. Think before you overindulge.
Don’t ignore medical issues.
Once you come out of addiction and into recovery so many things that you haven’t paid much attention to seem to rear their ugly head.
One thing in particular that you are likely to come across is health issues other than addiction that need professional treatment such as stomach problems, dental issues, and even treatment for old injuries that you did not handle at the time.
Of course, seeking medical treatment can get expensive. Yet, there are some strategies you can use to lessen the final burden.
One way is to always make sure that your medical insurance will cover the cost of what it is you need. An alternative is to find a clinic offering free medical care.
Don’t Get Caught Up
If you suffered from addiction to pain pills or other opiates and feel it is your doctor’s fault, you may want to contact a lawyer such as Pittman, Roberts & Welsh, PLLC to see whether or not you have a case for compensation.
Especially when it comes to injury or medical negligence. The money from this can then be used to cover your costs if the injury or illness in question was not your fault. Not to mention, give you some extra cash in your pocket.
We all know that exercise is good for us, but it really can be a lifesaver when you are going through recovery.
In fact, not only can it help to make us feel better by releasing endorphins but it can also give us something positive to focus on and aim for outside of getting clean.
Additionally, exercise can be an excellent way of processing and clearing negative emotions. Many of which are likely to surface during recovery. S
o if you’re struggling, get those tennis shoes on and go for a run, right now. Or in my case, a slow walk! ? Exercising is something I seriously need to work on. Not to mention, smoking doesn’t help.?
Check in with your sober support.
You MUST have some type of support in addiction recovery. It doesn’t matter what program you follow or what treatment you use.
Don’t try to do it all alone.
You need someone to support you, hold you accountable, and to listen when you are going through difficult times. This support will help to improve your well-being in recovery. Both mentally and physically.

We both know that quitting an addiction and trying to build a new life once sober can be a tough thing to do. In fact, it’s hard as hell. Seeming virtually impossible at times.
Therefore it’s always wise to embrace the assistance that is offered. Both for your mental and physical health if you want to give yourself the best chance of recovery possible.
Take Action To Improve Your Well-Being In Recovery
Making the choice to live a healthy sober lifestyle is great. You can post up pics of things you want to do, what you want to look like, and motivational quotes to inspire you to continue improving your well-being.
But the truth is, if you don’t take physical action, all the articles, websites, and advice in the world isn’t going to make one bit of a difference.
So this is what I want you to do.
Make a list of what you got to do relating to the 4 things mentioned above. Then, do one thing at a time and keep going until your list is complete.
- Eat Well – Start drinking x amounts of water a day, cut back on sugar, cut out cookies and ice cream.
- Medical Issues – Get checked up at your doctor’s office, go to the dentist, make an eye appt, take care of anything else absolutely crucial.
- Exercise – Go for a walk each evening, do yoga every morning, ride bikes with your kids, take up boxing, only allow yourself to chill on the couch for 2 hours a day.
- Support – Call a loved one once per week, see your therapist 2x per month, get a recovery mentor, join the Pocket Rehab app and befriend 3 people.
Once you start doing this stuff, it becomes a habit. It becomes natural and part of your daily routine. You accomplish one thing and add on another and keep going and going. All of this stuff combined is a surefire way to improve your well-being in recovery.
